history
"Where did the name "Seven Ranges" come from?" Although Seven Ranges Mfg. Corp. was founded in 1981,
the history of the original Seven Ranges goes back to the 1700's.
In 1785, the Continental Congress was looking ahead, looking to the new Republic’s expansion, spreading westward into Ohio Country. Thomas Hutchins, US Geographer, was engaged to plot seven blocks of land called ranges in this unknown territory. Starting where the Ohio River touches the Pennsylvania border, he ran a line west 42 miles and cut north and south lines, laying out checkerboard patterns six miles square. The Seven Ranges land survey was completed in 1786. It covers most present day Jefferson, Harrison, Monroe and Belmont counties, most of Carroll County and small portions of surrounding counties.
